Roxburgh Dam

What Do We Do?

The Trust Deed sets out two main Trust purposes:

  • To enhance sports fisheries values and habitats in the Clutha River – this purpose includes assuming responsibility for an annual work programme funded by Contact Energy.
  • To investigate and then develop, if appropriate, a hatchery aimed at generating a population of (sea-run) salmon in the lower river that will support a recreational fishery.

Did you know?

The Clutha River is the southernmost recognised salmon river in New Zealand, with sea-run Chinook salmon arriving each spring and summer, although their numbers have declined since the Roxburgh Dam was built. These unique fish, also known as quinnat salmon, were introduced from California and undertake a remarkable once-in-a-lifetime journey: they return to the same river they were born in to spawn, stop feeding entirely once they enter freshwater, and then die after they spawn.
